Biodiversity Research Update: April 19, 2023

This post is part of the IBPBio blog, where we share news and reflections on our ongoing work in biodiversity research and conservation in the state of Maranhão, Brazil.

IBPBio – Instituto Baguaçu de Pesquisa em Biodiversidade – is a non‑profit organization dedicated to the study and protection of the Brazilian biodiversity. Since its foundation, the institute has been developing projects that combine scientific research, community engagement, and environmental education. Our team works in close partnership with universities, government agencies, and international organizations to promote sustainable solutions for the challenges facing our natural ecosystems.

In recent months, our field teams have been active in several regions of the Cerrado biome, monitoring wildlife populations and assessing the health of critical habitats. The data collected contributes to a better understanding of the pressures on local biodiversity and helps guide conservation strategies. One of the highlights of this period is the expansion of our drone monitoring program, which allows us to survey large areas with minimal disturbance to the environment.

We also continue to strengthen our collaboration with local communities. Through workshops and participatory mapping, we involve residents in the collection of traditional knowledge about native plants and animals. This approach not only enriches scientific data but also fosters a sense of shared responsibility for the preservation of the region’s natural heritage.

Follow our publications to stay updated on the progress of our projects and learn how you can support our mission. Every contribution, whether through donations or partnership, makes a difference in the effort to protect Brazil’s rich biodiversity for future generations.
